11 May How Do I Start Yoga as a Beginner in Melbourne?
To start yoga as a beginner in Melbourne, find a studio near you that runs dedicated beginner classes, book a low-cost or free intro session, wear comfortable clothes you can move in, and arrive 10 to 15 minutes early. You do not need flexibility, special equipment, or any prior experience. Most bayside Melbourne studios (including ours in Brighton, Mordialloc and Mornington) provide mats and props. The single best first step is a beginner-specific class with a teacher who offers modifications.
If you have been thinking about starting yoga in Melbourne but have no idea where to actually begin, you are in good company. Industry data suggests that around 1 in 6 Australians have tried yoga, but the number who think about starting and never actually walk through a studio door is much higher. The barrier is almost never the practice itself. It is the not knowing what to expect.
We have been welcoming first-time yogis through the doors of our three bayside studios in Brighton, Mordialloc and Mornington for years, and the same handful of questions come up every time. So we thought we would put it all in one place.
What kind of yoga should I try first?
If you have never done yoga before, a beginner-friendly class is your safest starting point. Here is a quick translation of the most common styles you will see on a Melbourne studio timetable, and which one suits a true beginner best.
- Yoga Fundamentals or beginner class. Slower pace, the teacher walks you through each pose, no expectation that you know what you are doing. This is the easiest entry point.
- Slow Flow. A beautiful next step once you have the basics. Links breath with gentle movement.
- Dynamic and flowing. Welcoming, but you will get more out of it once you have done a class or two of Fundamentals first.
- Slow, floor-based, and deeply stretchy. Poses are held for several minutes. Wonderful for beginners because nothing is fast moving.
- Yoga Nidra. Guided yogic sleep. No movement at all, just deep relaxation. A surprisingly good first experience for anyone hesitant about the physical side.
At Warrior One we run a free beginner class on the first weekend of every month at all three studios, which is the easiest, no-pressure way to dip your toe in.

What do I wear and bring to my first yoga class?
Wear comfortable, stretchy clothes you can move in. That is genuinely it. As for what to bring, the list is short.
- Yourself
- A water bottle
- An open mind
We provide everything else, including Manduka Pro mats, blocks, bolsters, straps and all the other nifty props. If you have your own mat and prefer to use it, please do.
Do I need to be flexible to start yoga?
No, and this is the biggest myth we hear. You start yoga to become more flexible, not the other way around. If you can only reach your shins in a forward fold, that is exactly where you start. Our teachers offer modifications in every single class, and our whole philosophy is do what you can. Yoga is not a competition, including with the person on the mat next to you.
How often should I practice yoga as a beginner?
Two to three classes a week is the sweet spot for beginners. It is enough to actually feel a difference in your body and your headspace, but not so much that you burn out or get sore.
- Once a week. You will maintain a sense of the practice but progress will be slow.
- Two to three times a week. The recommended starting point. Most people notice changes in flexibility, sleep and stress within a month.
- Four or more times a week. Suitable once you have a few months under your belt. Listen to your body.
Some of our long-time tribe members practise daily, others come once a week, and both are perfectly valid. Consistency matters more than frequency.
How do I find the right yoga studio in bayside Melbourne?
The right studio is one where you actually want to come back. Here is what to look for.
- A dedicated beginner class or free intro offer, so you can try it without committing
- Teachers who offer modifications and check in on new students
- A community that feels warm rather than intimidating
- A location you will actually drive to in winter, when motivation is low
If you are in the bayside area, our three Warrior One studios are at 59C Martin Street Brighton, 228 Beach Road Mordialloc, and on the Mornington Peninsula. Each has its own personality, but the welcome is the same across all three.
What actually happens in your first yoga class?
Here is exactly what to expect, step by step.
- Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early. Reception will check you in, give you the tour, and show you where to set up your mat.
- Tell the teacher it is your first class. Mention any injuries or things they should know about.
- Find a spot toward the middle of the room. Not the front, not hidden in the back.
- Sit on your mat until class starts. Phone away, eyes soft.
- Move at the pace your teacher sets. You will be guided through everything.
- Rest in child’s pose any time you need to. Nobody is watching you, we promise.
Afterwards, you will probably feel a mix of calm and slightly buzzy. That feeling is exactly why people keep coming back.
